There are a number of new features for the Podcasts app, including downloaded episode controls, annual subscription plans, partnerships with hosting platforms, and more.
New tools will allow for the easy removal of accumulated downloads and free up storage space. Users will be able to choose how many episodes of a show they want to download to their device, either by number of episodes or within a week.
Users will still be able to download all new episodes, but they will have to turn off downloads in order for the app to function. This will be able to provide different settings for different podcasts at the show level.
The updates will bring features to browse shows by season and filter episodes by status, and give creators the option to present annual subscription plans for premium podcasts alongside monthly subscription options, with annual subscriptions set to become the default. Cost savings will be displayed to users where relevant.
The Apple Podcasts Delegated Delivery system will allow creators to distribute both free and premium episodes directly to their subscribers. The program membership will not be required for the creators to publish their free episodes. More hosting providers will be added over time, and additional details about the new distribution system will be available nearer to launch. You can find more on the Apple Podcasts for Creators page.
Downloads of episode controls and annual podcast subscriptions will be available in a number of platforms this fall.
