The New York Rangers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime on Sunday to win the series.

The New York Rangers will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round of the playoffs.

The team was looking for a second-round appearance for the first time in a long time. The loss could mark the end of their veteran core, as center and defenseman Kris Letang are free agents this summer.

Shesterkin made 42 saves. The forward had a goal and two assists. The Rangers power play was the difference-maker in overtime, as it ranked fourth-best in the NHL and powered the team during the regular season.

Brock McGinn took a holding penalty on Miller. After pressuring the Pens, Panarin's shot from the right side beat Jarry for the overtime winner.

The lineup was back for Game 7. Crosby, who left the game with an upper-body injury, returned to the ice. Rickard Rakell, who had been absent since suffering an injury in the first game, did the same. The most dramatic return was that of regular-season starting goalie Jarry, who hadn't played since April 14 after breaking his foot.

The Rangers took a lead in the first period. After Shesterkin made a couple of saves on point-blank chances, a Danton Heinen turnover led to a 2-on-1 run by Chris and Mika. The puck was sent across the zone by Zibanejad and he passed it to Kreider in the right faceoff circle.

The Rangers had four penalties in the first period, including a double-minor for high-sticking on Jacob Trouba, who knocked Crosby out of Games 5 and 6.

The Pens tied the game on a weird sequence on the second Trouba penalty. Jeff Carter shot the puck at the Rangers net, and it appeared that Heinen knocked it past Shesterkin. The players raised their sticks. The league reviewed the play and spotted a goal, so play continued for another 27 seconds.

The bench in Pittsburgh celebrated and pointed to the roof for a review. The puck crossed the line before Fox could sweep it away.

The game was tied at the end of the first period. The Pens took the lead on a controversial video review in the second period. With Kaapo Kakko in the box for a delay of game penalty, Jake Guentzel took a Bryan Rust pass, kicked the puck to his stick, and scored on Shesterkin with his stick high in the air for a goal.

It was determined after a video review that the call on the ice would stand. According to the NHL Situation Room, the video review confirmed that Jake Guentzel's stick was at or below the height of the Rangers net when he directed the puck into the net.

The advantage was short-lived. Miller shot a puck off of Mike Matheson's skate and in behind Jarry to tie the game at 2-2.

Entering the game, the Rangers had scored on three of their past six power play opportunities. The third special-teams goal of the game was scored by the Pens. Trouba made a mistake and a turnover by Chytil gave Evan Rodrigues a chance to run. He swept a one-handed backhand shot past Shesterkin for the 3-2 lead in the second period.

It was a chance for redemption. He was called out by Mike Sullivan for taking a retaliation penalty in Game 6 that led to the Rangers comeback win.

It was a critical goal because of the ability of the Pens to close games. The Rangers were 4-20-2 when trailing after two periods and 331-2 when leading after two periods.

In the third, Jarry made a crucial stop on a short-handed break by the Rangers. The bench was upset by the play, as Marcus Pettersson had his helmet ripped off by the Rangers forward. Panarin won the game in overtime.

The Carolina Hurricanes franchise has only played the Rangers once in the playoffs. New York lost in the playoffs in 2020 to the Hurricanes in a series that included Shesterkin's playoff debut.
