The ruling party in Sweden supports the country's bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, according to the Prime Minister.

At a press conference on Sunday, the social democratic party decided that Sweden should join NATO.

The alliance has been opposed by the party for decades.

Sweden will apply to join NATO. On Saturday, Sauli Niinisto said he spoke with Russian President Putin and that he would apply to join NATO in the next few days.
