Several outlets reported that Russian forces appeared to be leaving the city of Kharkiv.
The Associated Press reported that the Ukrainian military was leaving the area on Saturday.
The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington, DC think tank, said in a report on Friday that it appears that the Russian military has decided to withdraw from the area around Kharkiv city in the face of Ukrainian counteroffensives.
The think tank said that it appears that Ukraine won the Battle of Kharkiv.
The report said that Ukrainian forces prevented Russian troops from encircling, let alone seizing Kharkiv, and then expelled them from around the city.
Prior to the withdrawal, there had been weeks of heavy shelling.
The AP reported that the general staff of the Ukrainians said that Russia was trying to destroy the fortifications in the eastern part of the country.
Russia has shifted focus after failing to capture a Ukrainian city before. Russian President Vladimir Putin rearranged his forces in the Donbas after they failed to take over Kyiv early on in the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Friday night address that others have been able to force Russian troops out of towns.
Zelenskyy said that the gradual liberation of the Kharkiv region proves that we will not leave anyone to the enemy.
Zelenskyy said that despite the victory, it is still unclear how long this war will last and that an end to the war would depend on support from outside nations.
McConnell and other GOP members traveled to Ukraine to show their support. In the last few weeks, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and first ladyJill Biden have visited Ukraine.
