The San Diego Padres have signed veteran infielder Robinson Cano.
The Mets released the 39-year-old after designating him for assignment a week earlier.
The Padres are hoping that the left-handed hitting Cano can improve their production at the position.
The Padres designated hitters are batting just.206 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Voit hit two home runs in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs.
Sometimes, Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim might be moved to the bench to make room for Cano at second base.
Kim is batting only.200/.326/.388, and there is additional need at the infield because of Fernando Tatis Jr.'s wrist injury and because top prospect C.J. Abrams was optioned back to the minor leagues after struggling earlier this
While serving his second suspension for performance enhancing drugs, Cano sat out last season. He hit.195 (8-for-41) with one home run, three RBIs and a.500 OPS in 43 plate appearances for the Mets this season.
He signed a 10-year, $240 million contract with the SeattleMariners, but he is still owing the New York Mets more than $43 million. He has lost over $35 million because of the two drug suspensions.
In 168 games for the Mets, Cano batting.270 with 24 homers, 72 RBIs and a.765 OPS, was acquired in a trade with the SeattleMariners.
In 17 seasons, the eight-time All-Star has a.302 career batting average with 335 home runs and 1,305 runs scored. He has 2,632 hits.
Right-handed pitcher Dinelson Lamet was sent to Triple-A El Paso.
