The girlfriend of Jerry Jeudy asked a judge to dismiss a case against him because of a dispute.
The woman, who has a one-month-old child with Jeudy, told the judge that she did not feel threatened during the incident and made contact with authorities.
Jeudy was arrested Thursday at the couple's suburban Denver home after his girlfriend reported that he had locked her belongings and items for the baby in his car, preventing her from returning to Virginia. He was arrested on suspicion of tampering with a domestic violence enhancer and had to spend the night in jail until he could appear before a judge.
Jeudy was released from jail and allowed to travel, despite the fact that the case was not immediately decided upon.
The case is still open, with Jeudy scheduled to appear next for a hearing to enter a plea on May 31.
Jeudy's lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said after the hearing that the domestic violence label should not have been applied to his case since there was no violence or attempted violence.
The case is about bad things happening to good people.
There were no allegations of physical violence. Domestic violence in Colorado can include any crime committed against an intimate partner or their property that is used to intimidate, coerce or seek revenge against them. The law requires police to arrest anyone they suspect of committing a crime.
The associate director of Violence Free Colorado said that preventing a partner from having access to money, personal belongings or medication is one of the examples of domestic violence.
Concerns that police were downplaying the danger of domestic abuse or feeling powerless to arrest a suspect if the victim denied abuse led to the development of mandatory arrest laws. She acknowledged that some domestic violence survivors don't want an arrest, which can lead to more violence against them later.
After the first day of the rookies mini camp Friday, Broncos first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett said that he met with Jeudy after his release from jail and that he was going to learn from it.
When asked if Jeudy would face any team discipline, he demurred: "You know, we will look into all the stuff and make sure we do the right stuff." We are here to support him and move on.
