The years-long nightmare of anyone who dares to own an non-Apple device may finally come to an end soon.
Mark Gurman reported on Friday that Apple is testing an alternative to the company's signature charging port, the Lightning port. You can't insert the wrong way with the newer, faster version ofusb with an oval-shaped port. It is the standard on any phone that isn't made by Apple, as well as Apple's own Mac and iPad products.
According to Gurman's report, Apple wouldn't make the switch until at least 2023. The European Union's parliament recently came to an agreement on standardizing theusb-c for all mobile devices, something Apple would have to comply with if it wanted to keep selling the iPhones in EU countries.

If you follow along with tech, you will see the benefits of such a change. Apple has put the phone on an island by keeping it with the Lightning port. You could use the same charger for multiple types of phones, laptops, video game controllers, tablets, and so on if you changed to the new standard. Data can be charged and transferred more quickly with the help of theusb-c.
The only downside is that if you own a Lightning cable, it would become useless immediately. Gurman said Apple is working on a solution to the problem, but customers are probably better off just getting a USB-C charge with their next phone.
This would be one of Apple's most customer-friendly moves in years, regardless of any short-term headaches it may create. The only device in my life that doesn't use theusb-c is the iPhone. I can replace any of my other charging cables if a Lightning cable is lost or wears out. It's annoying, and the fact that Apple can charge third-party device makers a fee to use Lightning isn't a good enough reason to make users like this.
One area where conforming to the rest of the tech world is best is where Apple charts its own path.
