Mark Gurman, an Apple whisperer, said that Apple is testing a swap for the Lightning port on the iPhones. Gurman says you shouldn't expect to see it in this year's lineup. The report is based on a reliable Apple analyst, who said this week that Apple would swap to a new type of phone in the second half of the 20th century.

It's not a complete surprise that the switch would be a big one. The iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Mini have been moved. The EU revealed a proposal in September that would require many devices, including smartphones, to include a port for theusb-c. There are benefits to moving to the newer, faster, and more reliable,usb-c.

Gurman said Friday that Apple has worked on the phone without a charging port in recent years.

Apple did not reply to a request for comment. In 2012 the company introduced the Lightning port.
