Toei has released a new trailer for Hideaki Anno's next project to coincide with the launch of Shin Ultraman in Japan. To mark the 50th anniversary of Shotaro Ishinomori's legendary Tokusatsu superhero series, Shin Kamen Rider is a complete remake of the original show.
If our first look at Shin Kamen Rider in action late last year was a testament to his fascination with the series, he has been obsessed with it since his youth. There is no triumphant theme song here. As Hongo races through on his bike, we are given no dialogue, just mysterious quarries and isolated shots of Hongo in and out of action. Shin is going to cover a lot of ground from the original Kamen Rider in its runtime, according to a few snippets of the second one.
There is still some of that retro flare that is framed in a modern eye despite the uneasy vibes of the trailer. The action feels very much like a classic Kamen Rider movie, and the villainous costumes feel like the seventies just given a contemporary budget. It seems that Anno is trying to make something that feels like the original Kamen Rider, rather than something that is more like Shin Ultraman. We will have to wait and see if that plays out, but we are not going to say that is a bad thing right now.
The movie Shin Kamen Rider will be shown in Japanese theaters.
