The British boxer won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

His last bout was a sixth-round knockout loss to Kell Brook.

Khan posted on social media that it was time to hang up his gloves.

I want to thank the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me, he said.

At the 2004 Olympics, Khan burst on to the scene. He was the only boxer in the Olympics.

Anthony Joshua andNicola Adams are two future Olympic stars because of a silver medal in Athens.

Khan's transition into professional boxing came as a huge deal.

He raced to 18 straight wins as a professional, with his lightning-fast hands despatching most opponents in exciting fashion.

Khan moved to the US to work with Freddie Roach after a knockout loss.

Just 10 months after his first career defeat, Khan became the new light-welterweight champion when he beat Kotelnik at Manchester Arena.

Breaking America

Khan spoke of a desire to "crack America", a mission he achieved. He became a global star when he was at the arenas on the Las Vegas strip.

His win over Judah earned him the IBF belt and a unified champion title. His victories over the likes of Marcos Maidana and Luis Collazo further solidified his status as a British great.

His career has had setbacks as well. He has been knocked out by Danny and Saul and has also been defeated by other pound-for-pound stars.

While those defeats leave a blemish on his record, Khan has been praised for his willingness to take on the best and never duck a challenge.

What next for Khan?

One of the biggest rivalries in British boxing history finally came to an end with the final outing of Khan.

Khan said his love of the sport was over after he was outclassed by Brook in front of a packed-out crowd.

In the weeks that followed, Khan had suggested he might not be ready to hang up the gloves on a defeat, but has now decided to follow his rival into retirement.

Khan has previously said he would like to pursue managing fighters. He worked with the World Boxing Council to promote boxing in the Middle East.

Outside the ring, he has maintained a strong public profile through his appearances in reality gameshow and his own reality TV show.
