Foreign Office clarifies passport validity rules for EU

The requirements for passport validity have been clarified by the Foreign Office.

There are reports of passengers being wrongly turned away by airlines.

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), the update says, you can.

Your passport has to be:

The issue was issued less than 10 years before you entered the country.

It is valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave.

Before you travel, you must check your passport. Extra months may have been added to your passport's expired date if it was issued before 1 October.

If you think your passport doesn't meet the requirements, contact the embassy of the country you are visiting. If you need to renew your passport, do so.

More than 30 European countries were updated on Thursday, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece and Portugal.
