  • The former reality TV star is due to be sentenced this month.

  • The sentencing memo was filed by the attorneys.

  • Federal prosecutors requested a 20-year prison sentence in their sentencing memo.

The former reality TV star, who was convicted of receiving and possession of child pornography, asked a federal judge for mercy in a sentencing memo on Wednesday.

His attorneys have said that he will appeal the verdict. He is set to be sentenced on May 25, and prosecutors want him to serve 20 years in prison because of his sexual interest in children.

In a 53-page memo, the attorneys for the child molester asked for a five-year prison term followed by supervised release. The attorneys tried to get the judge to give them a lighter sentence, and at times even cast the victim as the one who had committed the crime.

His life has been shattered before the court pronounces its sentence.

There were allegations of child-sexual-abuse material in the trial. Federal agents and computer forensics experts testified in detail about the material found on the computer, the software he used, and even the lengths he went to hide his internet activity. The details from the trial testimony were used by the federal prosecutors to argue for a harsh sentence.

At the trial, the attorneys argued that the client was not the only one with access to the computer, and that one of the employees downloaded the material. In their sentencing memo, the attorneys for the man urged the judge to place what happened here into context, and suggested that the crime was less severe than other child pornography cases.

Someone accessed this material, viewed some of it, and then deleted all of it within a few days, according to the attorneys.

A number of letters from friends and relatives were included in the memo. They included letters from his mother, his wife, family friends, and members of his church community, all of whom described him as a compassionate and generous man.

The attorneys for Duggar noted that their client maintains his innocence and intends to exercise his right to appeal, but also that he accepts that the crime for which he is being sentenced is serious.

In crafting the punishment, he wants the court to consider the person he really is, his attorneys wrote.
