Air traffic controllers in Jamaica went on strike Thursday, causing all flights to and from the airports in Montego Bay and Kingston to be canceled. At least 40 flights to and from the U.S., Canada and within the Caribbean were canceled.

The tourists in Jamaica were stuck in their resorts.

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority was working to restore normal to Jamaica's airspace in the shortest possible time, although there is no word on when air service will resume.

Thousands of customers went without water as a result of the National Water Commission workers walking out. The Jamaica Civil Service Association, which represents 30,000 government workers, put the government on notice that strike action was imminent.

According to news reports, Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged public sector workers and their unions to be reasonable in their demands for wage and salary adjustments.

It is your work that keeps the planes coming in, the water flowing, and the students in school, Holness said.
