There are thousands of games that can be played on PS5 through PS5 backward compatibility, but very few are specifically designed for Sony's newest powerhouse. We have rounded up the best PS5 games that you can play today and split them up so that you can find what interests you most. We have free-to-play games, as well as games that are free to play.

We tried to stick with games with PS5 versions or updates to take advantage of the extra power. It is not a complete list of everything available on the system. You will want to check out the best PS4 games. We will add more categories as more games are released.

Best PS5 RPGs

Role-playing games are some of the most popular on the market. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of PS5 designed games at the moment, but the few that are are worth your time. The PS4 has a huge back catalog of games to peruse.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is phenomenal because of the experience FromSoftware has between the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, and Sekiro. George R.R. Martin is the creator of Game of Throne. In Elden Ring, players take on the role of a Tarnished in an effort to repair the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord.

RECOMMENDED VIDEOS FOR YOU...

Elden Ring was a stunning world that players could get lost in for hundreds of hours. We gave Elden Ring a perfect 5/5 in our review, stating that it is a masterpiece in open-world game design. FromSoftware has created a gorgeously haunting universe that needs to be explored. It is an obvious contender for game of the year and is a quintessential actionRPG.

The first game in the series, Demon's Souls, was originally developed by FromSoftware. In the Kingdom of Boletaria, players embark on a journey to defeat King Allant, who has awakened an ancient evil and its demon army. There are no difficulty settings to turn the combat down, as you can expect. Or you die trying. Over and over.

The attention to detail is immediately apparent, as we noted in our linked review, as Bluepoint completely remakes Demon's Souls as a PS5 launch title. While staying true to the original vision, its graphics are 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465. Bluepoint made some quality-of-life fixes and minor changes, and left any old jank in the past. One of the greatest remakes ever done is what remains. It is more of an action-RPG than a straight-up one.

Genshin Impact

The PS5 version of Genshin Impact is compatible with the PS4 version. The fantasy world of Teyvat has seven regions that worship gods known as Archons. It is up to you to help the people across the lands with their own conflicts after your character is trapped in Teyvat.

Genshin Impact has gatcha mechanics, a way to monetize the game and subsidize development. Microtransactions are a practice that many people hate, but they are not as bad as they seem on paper.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

A popular book series by a Polish author led to the creation of The Witcher, one of the most acclaimed games out there. The Witcher 3 is the most beloved game of them all. The final battle between Geralt and Ciri was the culmination of years of work when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in 2015. Some of the greatest games ever made are it and its expansions.

In a fantasy world inspired by Slavic mythology, The Witcher 3 features fantastic monsters and magic across a vast open world full of mysteries to uncover and towns to explore. The outcomes of the narrative are affected by your choices as Geralt. It is easy to get lost in the world that CD Projekt RED has created.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

The series started as an action/adventure stealth series and has evolved into a full-blownRPG with recent entries like Origins and Odyssey. The newest game in the series, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, allows players to live out their Viking fantasies in England during the Dark Ages. The current king and citizens of Norway are not very kind to foreigners, even though our hero sets sail for the shores of England.

A male or female Eivor can be personalized with different tattoos and hair styles. The option to dual- wield two shields is available in Valhalla. There is a skill tree with over a dozen abilities. personalize them to your playstyle and start raiding.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition

It is the game that will keep going. If people didn't keep buying it, it wouldn't happen if it was re-released for the millionth time. People keep buying it because it's still good. Getting lost in dozens of sidequests and exploring its many dungeons is something that never gets old. It was a good thing that whatever magic ingredient was added to its formula worked, it will be years before we see The Elder Scrolls 6.

The same game you know and love is included in the Anniversary edition. Creation Club content and fishing are included in the Anniversary Edition. Pick up your weapons again and play through a number of new quests with new rewards to earn. Those who already own the Special Edition can get a discounted upgrade to the Anniversary Edition.

The Nioh Collection

The first and second games in the action-RPG series are included in the Nioh Collection. Nioh follows an Irish samurai in Japan during the 1600s and is similar to Dark Souls. Nioh 2 takes place in the late 1500s and features a demon who is trying to take down Hideyoshi.

Some of the very few titles that support such high frame rates support 4K resolution. Each comes with six expansions and all major DLC. Other games for PS5 have dualsense features, and they also support them.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade

Final Fantasy is one of the most well-known and beloved JRPGs. Final Fantasy 7 is considered the best entry in the franchise by many. The remake was better on PS5 than it was on VHS. It also added DLC starring Yuffie.

Final Fantasy 7 ReMake Intergrade is a must for any fan of the game. The original was great, but it was modernized for today's audiences with new mechanics. It is difficult to achieve when the balance is so delicate.

Best PS5 Action/Adventure Games

When the genre frequently borrows from others, action/adventure can mean many things to different people. It is easy to define an action game as an action game. There are a lot of great action/adventure titles on PS5 and they make up a lot of theAAA market today.

Horizon Forbidden West

It was always going to be difficult to follow in the footsteps of Horizon Zero Dawn. It was certainly up for the challenge. The studio created a worthy sequel to one of the best games of all time, and it further developed Aloy's character and the world of Horizon in meaningful ways. This is a great game for fans of adventure games on the PS.

Aloy is in a race against time to save the planet in the aftermath of Zero Dawn. She travels to restore GAIA, a benevolent artificial intelligence that should be able to repair Zero Dawn's terraforming system. She doesn't know what to expect on her adventure.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima was already one of the most acclaimed games on PS4 when we reviewed it, and it became even better with the Director's Cut on PS5. Adding a new location with Iki Island and a host of dualsense features, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut gives those who have already played on PS4 some great reasons to come back in. Tsushima is as beautiful as ever, and the combat is as good as you remember.

Even if it means going against everything he has learned, samurai Jin Sakai must do anything he can to save his people. Fans of the aforementioned series will feel right at home in Ghost of Tsushima.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

The Legacy of Thieves Collection includes Lost Legacy for PS5. Fidelity Mode favors 4K resolution and 30FPS, Performance Mode favors 60FPS, and Performance+ Mode favors 120FPS. These games are even more stunning on PS5 as we wrote in our review.

Nathan Drake and his long-lost brother are going to find a pirate's treasure in the last adventure of the series. Their journey takes them across the globe and leads them to some enemies. The Lost Legacy is a movie about two people searching for a body of water in India.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

One of the best entries in the franchise to date is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Insomniac's long-running series features a Lombax named Ratchet fighting evil with his robot buddy Clank. Rivet is a freedom fighter who is against the evil Emperor Nefarious.

Things go awry when Clank gives Ratchet a Dimensionator with the hope that he will find other Lombaxes. They end up in another world. This year's summer blockbuster on PS5 isRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Taking players through diverse and gorgeous worlds with excellent combat and platforming, is a ton of fun to play.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

You will be hard-pressed to find a better superhero game than Insomniac's Spider-Man, which was released a few years ago. It is right up there with the Batman Arkham series. Since Insomniac knocked it out of the park, it was only a matter of time before it made a follow-up. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is not a full sequel, but a solo adventure set in the same universe after the first game.

Spider-Man is a friendly neighborhood in New York, and it has a new leader with PeterParker on vacation. When Harlem comes under attack by an energy corporation hell-bent on ruining the city for its own gain, Miles suits up to take them down with the help of a few friends. New suits, skills, and activities are available in the city.

Guardians of the Galaxy

After a lackluster response to the movie, the team behind the film needed to take it to the next level. In an unforgettable adventure across a galaxy decimated by a massive war, the heart and humor of the movies are captured by the film. Things don't turn out as planned as they cause more chaos than they could have imagined, as Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax, and Groot are on a job to exploit the situation.

A single-player experience focused on a strong narrative is exactly what the game needed. There are no microtransactions to speak of. One of the best PS5 games today is due to the tighter focus and excellent delivery.

Control: Ultimate Edition

The weird horror game from Remedy has its own quirks. The Federal Bureau of Control is located in the Oldest House, a brutalist building that houses a secret government agency. As you fight your way through enemies in the hopes of finding your brother, the supernatural becomes reality.

Control on PS5 has two graphics modes, one that increases performance to 60 frames per second and the other that turns on ray tracing effects at 30 frames per second. No matter which resolution you choose, you will get a 4K resolution. You can change these modes whenever you want in the display settings without quitting the game and loading from the main menu like with most other titles. Control on PS5 takes less than 10 seconds to load, which is far faster than what it took on PS4.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

It is probably getting old to hear that Breath of the Wild clone is called Immortals Fenyx Rising. It plays like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and uses more of the Greek mythology featured in the latter game. We noted in our review that it seemed destined for success if it was mix in a lot of humor.

A young Greek hero washes up on the Golden Isle to find it in disarray after Typhon escaped from Tartarus. You will need to find the gods and help them restore their powers to defeat Typhon and his group. There are several locations based on the Greek gods in the film. There are plenty of puzzles to solve and you can flex your combat skills as well.

No Man's Sky

No Man's Sky was bad when it was launched. Hello Games worked night and day to deliver significant content updates and quality-of-life fixes that dramatically improved the game, thanks to nearly endless support and a drive to make the game live up to its full potential. An excellent game that was recently enhanced for PS5 with more populated, denser worlds, improved resolution and framerates, and adaptivetrigger support remains.

No Man's Sky has a procedurally-generated universe with over 18 quintillion planets. There is no shortage of things to discover, from hostile planets with boiling temperatures and acid rain to tropical climates. As you fly across the skies, collect resources to build bases and acquire better ships.

Watch Dogs: Legion

The developers of the Watch Dogs series went from Chicago to San Francisco before ending up in London for Watch Dogs: Legion, which is about a post-Brexit dystopia ruled by a militaristic state. The formula was changed so that anyone can be a character in the game. There is no such thing as an NPC here. Each character has a unique set of skills and qualities that they bring to the table, helping DedSec root out corruption in the city.

We wrote about it in our review, and it is a fun title, because it is all open-world and has a host of activities to do. It has plenty of ways to complete missions based on your playstyle. Whether you are a brawler, want to go in stealthier, or spray paint on everything, you can do it.

Best PS5 Shooters

There is something special about a good shooter. There is no shortage of things you can do and what monsters you can kill. You will end up being the hero in any of the fantastic PS5 games.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

The studio put a fresh spin on the series with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, which is considered to be one of the best on consoles. The franchise's signature brand of humor and a whole lot of guns are featured in the DLC.

There are a lot of new mechanics to keep it fresh, with the ability to change your character for the first time, multiclassing, a dedicated melee system, and spells that replace grenades. If you were looking for a breath of fresh air, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was it.

Deathloop

Deathloop is an immersing sim that blends first-person shooting with action, and we found it to be Arkane's best. Deathloop and its island of Blackreef will draw you in. You can also play in a mode that allows you to invade other people's games.

You are stuck in a time loop and have to take out eight targets before the day is over. Visionaries rule the island, trying to hold an eternal party with their legion of loyal cultists. It will be difficult to break the loop. Arkane has described this as a murder puzzle, and you will die before you can get that one perfect loop. An assassin is hunting you down.

Borderlands 3

The role-playing shooter across the galaxy is taking on new planets and locations in the newest game from Gearbox Software. Over a billion procedurally-generated guns with unique parts and features were created by Gearbox. Why not use a gun that plays metal music or screams when you use it, for example, or melt faces with exploding lasers? We loved the fun mechanics in the game.

It almost feels like there are never-ending amounts of fun to be had because of the amount of content it comes with. It becomes a fantastic game to play when you combine this with the brand's sense of humor and art style.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

You can say what you want about the Call of Duty series, but it's up to the developer to make a good shooter. The gunplay is second to none, and Black Ops Cold War keeps it a bit more grounded than other recent entries in the series. It has a single-player campaign, as well as new and returning modes, along with the popular zombies mode.

Your character is recruited by a top agent from the CIA and goes on a mission to stop a Russian spy who is based on a real-life spy. He is real in Black Ops Cold War, and President Ronald Reagan approves the mission that sends you around the world to destroy this threat. Your loyalties will be tested in this campaign.

DOOM Eternal

The sequel to the soft reboot of the series that id Software released a few years ago is called DOOM Eternal. With Earth overrun by demonic forces, it's up to you as the Doom Slayer to take down the Hell Priests and Khan Maykr, an evil being hell-bent on destroying all of humanity.

The Doom Slayer is up against a lot of baddies, some of which are returning. DOOM Eternal encourages players to push forward and eliminate enemies through brute force while also managing their resources. The combat shotgun and BFG 9000 are some of the guns you have at your disposal. That isn't enough for you? There are melee weapons like chainsaws.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light

The bread and butter of the game is its PvE and co-op. The fifth major expansion, Beyond Light, made it possible for players to stop an imminent threat against the Traveler. To keep the install size down, Bungie has removed some guns and locations from Beyond Light, but it plans on rotating them in and out of its vault.

The PS5 upgrade includes true 4K at 60 frames per second, as well as a 120 frames per second Crucible mode. You may have to play it for yourself to see how good it is, but it is so good. The next-gen update added a FOV slider, and at some point in the future, Bungie will add cross-play so that all players can play together.

Best PS5 Multiplayer Games

The rise of multi-player is a sign that gaming is a more social activity than ever. Whether you are sitting next to a friend on the couch or playing with someone from another country, games bring people closer together. It is possible for people to have fun when they cannot go outside. There are a few of the best PS5 games.

Among Us

Among Us took the internet by storm in 2020 despite being released in 2018? It was only available for PC and mobile at the time, but now it is available for PS4 and 5. The social deduction game is perfect for large groups of people.

The players have to figure out who is an Imposter and kill the others on the map. Crewmates set out to complete tasks without being murdered while the Imposter attempts to sabotage them. It is an incredibly simple premise that makes for some very fun game play.

Apex Legends

Respawn has a new game called Apex Legends. Instead of being a one-on-one battle, the game is more of a team sport. Sixty players, each in teams of three, battle it out with unique characters who have their own skills and abilities. It is set in the same sci-fi universe as Titanfall, another property by Respawn Entertainment.

Microtransactions, battle passes, and new seasons of content keep the experience fresh for players. If you don't like battle Royales, you can switch to the one that changes up the formula just enough to be your choice.

Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege lives and dies by its online component, so it is a good thing that it is supported by new seasons of content. Terrorist Hunt and the competitive Hostage, Bomb, and Secure Area missions are some of the most popular modes in the game. Operators bring their own attributes and skills to the battlefield.

Rainbow Six Siege is still going strong despite its success. Last year, the company announced a player count of over 60 million. New Operators, perks, skins, gear, and more are included in its yearly passes.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty Warzone is a different version of the game. Up to 150 players can compete in a match, with some limited-time modes that allow for 200 players to enter the battlefield at the same time. Warzone is the developer of this Call of Duty title and they have some of the best gunplay in the business.

It has a name and graphics that make it stand out from the rest. If you log in with an account from the publisher, you can play with people on both consoles.

Fortnite

There is almost nothing that can stop the domination of the game. Continually one of the most- watched and most-streamed games, there is no stopping what Epic can do with its free-to-play battle royale. Millions of players hop on every day with new battle passes and seasons of content from the company.

100 players are thrown onto an island to fight and be the last one standing. It has an instantly recognizable art style and is teaming up with companies like Disney and Warner Bros. to introduce new cross-over events. Christopher Nolan streamed one of his movies in the game, as well as performing a concert. It is a cultural phenomenon that has brought people together.

Best PS5 Games for Kids

Some games are not child-friendly. Many of the most popular holiday releases are rated T or M. There are lots of options for the younger crowd. The PS5 has some amazing games for kids, and I expect more as the years go on. Some of the best PS5 games for kids are listed here.

Bugsnax

Bugsnax is a title that introduces players to the Bugsnax creatures. These creatures are part bug, part snack and are waiting for you to take a picture. These little treats can be fed to the Grumpuses in the area, transforming parts of their bodies based on what they ate. It is kind of horrifying for such a cute game, but we loved it in our review.

You have a dual purpose for traveling to Snaktooth Island. It is up to you to find out what happened to Lizbert Megafig. It is a lot weirder than you may think, even for a game about half-bug, half-snack animals.

Astro's Playroom

Astro's Playroom is a sequel to the virtual reality title Astro Bot Rescue Mission, but you don't need a virtual reality headset to play it. Astro's Playroom is a 3D platforming game that comes pre-installed on every PS5 console. We noted in our review that it takes full advantage of its feedback and adaptivetriggers, allowing you to truly feel your actions in-game, creating a more immersive experience than ever.

The Playroom at Astro is filled with nostalgia. Each of its four main areas is based on a section of the PS5 and there are hidden items and Easter eggs from the past to collect.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sumo Digital did a great job of capturing the charm of Sackboy: A Big Adventure, despite not being developed by Media Molecule. Sackboy is enjoying his time in Craftworld, but when the villainous Vex threatens to destroy Craftworld and everyone in it, Sackboy has to save the day.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a collection of levels designed by Sumo Digital. They can be played alone or with up to four other people. The PS3 version of Super Mario 3D World is absolutely deserving of a place in any gaming library, according to our Sackboy: A Big Adventure review.

Best PS5 Horror Games

There are a lot of different shapes and sizes of horror games. The horror genre spans a lot, from psychological horror to supernatural thrillers. The PS5 hasn't seen many top-tier horror games yet, but there are a couple that are excellent.

Lady Dimitrescu, who the internet lovingly dubbed Tall Vampire Lady, was partially to blame for Resident Evil Village making waves when it was first announced. However, she is only one part of a larger game. There are lots of scares to be had, but that is only one section of the castle.

After Resident Evil 7, the village follows the character of Ethan Winters. When Chris Redfield gets into his life and turns it upside down, he goes to a European village where he can meet other ugly people. Resident Evil Village takes everything you loved about the franchise and combined it with some homages to classic and modern horror to create something unique in video games today. It is an absolute spectacle, showing off the best of the RE Engine and the PS5 as a bonus.

Alan Wake Remastered

It is not a lake. It is an ocean. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel to Alan Wake ever since the final words were spoken. Alan Wake has yet to receive a proper sequel, despite the fact that we learned a lot about him in Control's DLC. The decision to remake the original could bode well for future plans. This is the first time that Alan Wake has appeared on the PS platform.

Alan Wake plays the writer who travels to Bright Falls with his wife to try to overcome a severe case of writer's block. Alan's nightmares seem to come to life, tormenting him and capturing his wife. Alan must do everything he can to stop the Dark Presence from escaping.

Returnal

Everyone was surprised when Returnal arrived. Housemarque, the developer of Resogun, proved that they could do cinematic games that stand tall among the crowd. It takes full advantage of the PS5 dualsense controller, using its feedback and adaptive triggers for an engaging experience.

This roguelike has a time loop where you control an astronauts crash on a strange planet. It is beautiful and fun, but brutally difficult. As soon as you die, you are sent back to the beginning. Our Returnal review said it was a blend of action and psychological horror, with a surprising story and gorgeous visuals.

The best of the best

Hopefully this list will help you narrow down your choices. Over the years, it will continue to grow because of the great games on the horizon. If you notice that one of your favorite games is no longer on the list, it could be that it has lost its spot to another title.

Now that you have bought a library of PS5 games, it is time for the next console to support backward compatibility.
