Four days after being officially released by the New York Mets, Robinson Cano is reportedly nearing a deal with the San Diego Padres.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network and the New York Post, the Padres and Robinson are close to an agreement.

Cano has no intention or interest to prove himself in the minors.

The contract is expected to be finalized on Friday, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

The Mets had seven days to either trade or place him on waivers after they designated him for assignment. He was let go by the team on Sunday.

Because of the shortened spring training, Major League Baseball allowed teams to carry 28 players on the roster for the first month of the season. The deadline for teams to cut their rosters down was May 2.

The Mets were left with a bill for $44.7 million that was left on the contract of Robinson Cano. He was batting.195 with one home run and three runs scored in 12 games.

San Diego could use a bench player or a designated hitter. In 15 games, Voit has a.184/.350/.327 slash line with two homers and seven runs.

He wanted to reestablish himself for the Mets this season. The eight-time All-Star was suspended for the entire 2021 season after testing positive for a performance enhancer.

The 39-year-old free agent found his career at a crossroads after a slow start. His sample size of at-bats this season is so small that it is hard to draw any conclusions from his performance.

During the 2020 season, he had a slash line and homers in 49 games.

The Padres would be a good landing spot. They are a playoff contender in the NL with plenty of depth already on the roster, so he doesn't have to come in to potentially save their season.
