According to sources, the Los Angeles Lakers have been given permission to interview Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson for their coaching job.

Sources said that the Lakers have been meeting with candidates in recent weeks and plan to talk with Atkinson in the near future.

As an assistant and head coach in the NBA, Atkinson built a reputation for player development. He was the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets for three years and led them to a playoff appearance in his third season.

The Charlotte Hornets are looking for a new head coach, and one of the candidates is Steve Kerr's staff member with the Warriors. Sources said that Atkinson interviewed with the Hornets. Sources said that Mike D'Antoni and Darvin Ham are serious candidates for the Hornets.

The Lakers have talked with several coaches, including former Portland coach Terry Stotts, Toronto assistant Adrian Griffin, and former Golden State coach Mark Jackson. There is no need for the Lakers to make a hire in the near future.

The Lakers failed to make the playoffs after a 33-49 season.

In three-plus years with the Nets, he was 118-190 and resigned after an injury-plagued season. He was one of the highest paid assistants in the league when he joined Kerr's staff.
