We will need ways of moving in a virtual world without crashing into our furniture as virtual reality becomes more commonplace. The second-generation of the Kat Walk C virtual reality treadmill is hoped to be up to the challenge.
The road to virtual reality reported on the Kat Walk C2 which is an omnidirectional treadmill that allows the user to move about a virtual environment as naturally as real life. You can perform a number of actions in a game.
The C2 has one-to-one real time foot tracking using optical sensors with less than 10 milliseconds.
The C2 Plus model allows the user to sit down. The company showed a person using the chair attachment to sit in a virtual car. This would make driving games more enjoyable.
The C2 is compatible with all major headsets and works with all free locomotive games.
The original Kat Walk virtual reality treadmill was launched on a crowd funding platform. The next one was the Kat Walk C in 2020. The C2 will be launched on May 14.
There will be different tiers on the project.
The add-on for the C2 Plus model is $200.
It is around the same price as the Virtuix Omni. The Kat C2 does not require a Microsoft Kinect for spatial awareness. It seems to track movement better than the treadmill.
The original Kat Walk has found success at the commercial level. The C2 is being positioned for the consumer audience. This would make it easier for people who don't have a lot of space to use virtual reality.
The first units will be shipped in July once the Kat C2 launches on May 14.
