Kehler was one of the most prolific character actors in Hollywood, with more than 170 screen credits to his name. Kehler began his career in New York while waiting tables. One year before his first screen appearance in 1983's Strange Invaders, he decided to become an actor and found his way to the prestigious Actors Studio.
Kehler was a regular on TV, appearing on shows such as Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere. He appeared in the movie Point Break in the 90s. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Northern Exposure, Wings, and ER were some of the most popular shows of the early 90s.
After his appearance in Waterworld in 1995, his movie career began to take off, with roles in Lethal Weapon 4 and David Lynch's Lost Highway. He delivered his signature role as The Landlord in The Big Lebowski. As the sheepish landlord with dreams of leading a modern dance show, he turned a few lines into a memorable and hilarious turn that grew funnier and more poignant with every viewing.
