During its I/O developer conference on Wednesday, Google announced several new gadgets, including a new budget phone and headphones. The company teased its flagship phone, which is coming this fall, and said it is working on a new device.
Hardware isn't a key part of the business, but that seems to be changing as it continues to launch new products. The other revenue segment of the company, which includes hardware sales, apps and nonadvertising revenue, generated $8.16 billion. The company's sales increased from the year-ago quarter, and CEO Sundar Pichai said the company hit an all-time sales record despite supply constraints.
Here's what was announced.
The Apple Watch has features similar to the Apple Watch, but it doesn't work with the iPhone, so it's not appealing to customers who use the phone instead.
It will be able to pull on years of research and development from the fitness startup it acquired last year. Users will be able to track their sleep, heart rate and workouts.
The Wear OS software on the watch lets users do things such as check messages and download music. Users can connect their smart home devices to the internet and get directions, so they can change their thermostat or turn off the lights.
The company told reporters in a call that it will be a premium-priced product. It will be available in the fall.
Other companies built watches using the software.
The new phones were announced by the company.
The latest budget phone from the company will be released this summer. The Pixel 6a is slightly smaller and will cost $449.
It is the first time that a Pixel phone will have an all-day battery that lasts up to 72 hours.
The budget phone will have the same power as the more expensive ones.
Five years of security updates will be given to the Pixel 6a, which comes in three colors: chalk, charcoal and sage.
The new phones were teased. They will use the next generation of the chip and ship with the latest version of the OS. The company didn't give pricing, but the 6 Pro started at $899.
The fastest-selling device of all time is the Pixel 6. The 6 sold more units than the 4 and 5 in their first six months. The company wants to continue that momentum, which could help it take share from other makers.
There will be a new tablet that will run on the same chip as the one teased. The company said it will be a high-end product.
The company hasn't launched a device in a while. Some users said that the tablet felt like a laptop. Prior to the release of the operating system, it was difficult for the company to use it as a tablets operating system. The hardware team at Google will focus on building laptops in the future, but the company is still committed to working with partners on tablets for all segments of the market.
The new earbuds are called the Pixel Buds Pro. Preorder the Pixel Buds Pro on July 21 and it will be on the shelves on July 28.
The Buds Pro finally offer active noise cancellation, which helps block out background noise and means they will compete more directly with Apple's AirPods Pro. The earbuds have microphones that beamforming, a voice accelerometer, and wind-blocking mesh covers to allow for clearer calls. Spatial audio makes it sound like music is coming from all around you. That feature is also offered by Apple.
Seven hours of listening time with noise cancellation or 11 hours without it is available with the Pixel Buds.
