Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that the Cleveland Guardians game against the Chicago White Sox has been postponed because of multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the organization.
The game was put off to allow for more testing. When it becomes available, MLB will give a rescheduling update.
Terry Francona, the manager of the Guardians, tested positive for COVID-19 and will be out indefinitely. He is not showing any symptoms. Francona missed most of the past two seasons with health issues.
Multiple positive tests among the coaches and traveling party, including Francona, led to the postponement of the game. Sources say that the positive tests are the result of some in the traveling party being sick.
The series finale was to be managed by DeMarlo Hale, who was the bench coach when Francona stepped away. Until Francona returns to the team, Hale will stay in that role.
The league postponed nine of 2,429 games last season because of COVID-19. The shortened 2020 season resulted in the postponement of forty five games.
