When the Ucl moves to a 36-team tournament in the 25th century, it will look like this.

This is a full breakdown of what this means for the top club competition.

Why is this all happening?

The bigger the clubs, the more money they get from broadcasting. The top teams want to play more meaningful games against their rivals, which should create more meaningful games at an earlier stage of the competition.

So does this mean more games?

The tournament was to double in size from 125 games to225, with each team playing 10 games in the group stage.

The total number of games in the season has been scaled back to 189.

There will be two extra matchdays needed for the group stage.

So what is the 'Swiss model'?

Instead of being drawn into eight groups of four, all clubs are placed into one giant table based on points and goal difference.

The Swiss system is used in chess and each team does not play all of the others. The chess format decides the next opponents for a team after each set of games, whereas in the Champions League all group-stage fixtures will be known at the start of the season.

It has been used in football with a large number of participants, including in the CONCACAF Nations League where all teams played four matches but the results were fed into one league of 34 nations.

How many teams will be in the new Champions League?

The number of clubs will increase. Most teams will play at least 10 games under the new format.

Where do the extra teams come from?

The club that finishes third in the league will go to the group stage if they play two rounds of qualification. France has been that country most of the time. AS Monaco would be promoted to the group stage based on league positions as of May 11. If Rennes were to be elevated from the UEL, they would be demoted to fourth in the league.

The leagues ranked outside the top 10 in the country coefficient are included in the additional team. The losing clubs in the final qualification round this season were: Dinamo Zagreb, Ferencvaros, and Ludogorets Razgrad.

At one point, this was to be given to the highest-ranked champion not to qualify for the group stage. Shakhtar Donetsk would have been better off due to their own high club coefficients, but they were not included in the qualification.

Two places are reserved for the two countries with the highest coefficients in the current season. The second place in the Dutch Eredivisie and the fifth place in the English premier league would get them into the group stage of the competition. Right now, that would be PSV Eindhoven and Spurs.

What happened to the places based on historical performance?

Two places were to be reserved for the clubs with the highest five-year UEFA coefficients who failed to qualify for the playoffs.

It still means that there could be leapfrogging, even though a club would have to qualify for Europe to be eligible. Manchester United could win the FA Cup, finish 8th in the league, and be promoted to the league based on their five-year coefficients. The team that finished fifth in the competition would be leapfrogged by Man United.

The two places are not in line with the values and solidarity-based European sports model, with qualification based on sporting merit.

Who will benefit from the two coefficient places?

The interest in the Netherlands getting an additional place in the Champions League was due to the fact that it was going to a team not from the Big Five leagues. This is an outlier.

Nine of the 10 slots were taken by England and Spain in the previous five seasons.

2020-21: England and Spain.

2019-20: Spain, Germany

2018-19: England, Spain

2017-18: England, Spain

2016-17: Spain, England

The beneficiaries would have been Real Sociedad, Getafe,Leicester City, and Bayer Leverkusen.

The Dutch Eredivisie has had three clubs in the group stage of the UECL this season, all of whom advanced. The Dutch got the second place in the coefficients table, thanks to the fact that they reached the final. The Big Five took positions 1 and 3-6, showing how hard it is to get a top two place.

The Dutch finished in the top 9 in the table in five of the five seasons.

An additional team in Europe is possible if a country gets a coefficient place. The premier league would get eight places, with non-UCL positions dropping down.

The European League is 1-5.

Europa League: 6, FA Cup winners

Europa Conference League: Carabao Cup winners

The places could drop to 7th and 8th if the cup winners finish in the top 6.

It also means that it is possible for 11 clubs to qualify, over half the league, if they qualify via a domestic route.

Is the one-year coefficient system better than historical performance?

There are pros and cons.

The original plan rewarded teams that played well in Europe over a five-year period. It created a safety net and may have given a club such as Manchester United a route into the playoffs.

Over the past few seasons, FC Porto, AS Roma, Benfica, and Shakhtar Donetsk gained a place under the original plan. Both systems would have benefited them.

The new plan allows smaller clubs to benefit from the performances of others. The other teams in the league have done well in Europe, so why should Getafe,Leicester and Real Sociedad get a place in the group stage?

How will they decide the fixtures?

The five-year club coefficients are expected to be used to create four pots of nine teams. Each team will play two teams from each pot to create a fixture list of roughly equal strength.

Under the current system, more big matches are created by the teams in the top pots being drawn against each other.

Two other clubs would be drawn from Pot 1, 2, 3 and 4. Teams from the same association can't play each other in the group stage.

The seeding pots would be based on a 36 team intake using the new system and final league tables.

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Manchester City, Inter Milan, and Lille.

Pot 2 includes Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla, and FC Porto.

Pot 3 includes Shakhtar Donetsk, Lyon, RB Leipzig, FC Salzburg, and Atalanta.

Pot 4 includes Dinamo Zagreb, Club Brugge, Young Boys, AC Milan, Real Sociedad, and VfL Wolfsburg.

Manchester City could have a Swiss Model fixture list, with teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, and FC Salzburg.

So who goes through to the knockout rounds?

The top eight go through to the round of 16 and will beseeded. The winners of the two-legged playoffs will be the unseeded teams and the loser will be out. There will be no teams in the knockout rounds of the Europa League. The clubs ranked 25th to 36th will be kicked out of Europe.

The team ranked 24th in the group stage, only good enough for an unseeded place in the Europa League, could go on to win the European title.

From the round of 16 onwards, the competition returns to the traditional format.

What about the Europa League and the Europa Conference League?

The size of the competition will increase from 32 teams to 36.

There will be eight group-stage games in the Europa League, but only six in the Conference League.

There will be playoffs to reach the round of 16, but no drop down for the loser from the Europa League into the Conference League.

This is good news for the teams that made it to the group stage. One of the four semifinalists in the Europa League dropped down to the group stage, while two of the final four were in the group stage.
