It's the same situation that Netflix finds itself in. A new show that has received perfect scores from critics and is popular with fans has not been renewed for a second season. The new UK drama about high school boys in love is called Heartstopper.
Even if their metrics don't indicate a huge hit, it seems like another prime moment for them to do it. I didn't see the show place in the top 10 list in the US since it was first aired. It ended up in the top 10 overall list for English-language shows, with 14 million hours watched.
Heartstopper's storyline could end after the events of season 1, but those behind the show want a second season. Joe Locke is the star here.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they develop as a couple if we get another season. There are three more graphic novels.
The cast and fans want more source material. What is the hold up? We have been here many times before, and this is one of those situations, whereNetflix loses nothing by greenlighting season 2. The Babysitter's Club, which had two 100% seasons reviewed before it was canceled due to global-based issues, is the best-reviewed series in history.
As far as I can tell, everything that is done by the company is based on how it is driving subscriber growth. The truth is that when your show does well in North America, as ours does, as far as Netflix is concerned, pretty much everyone who is going to have it has it. They are looking to drive subscriber growth in other parts of the world where this intellectual property doesn't have much recognition.
It is possible that Heartstopper will come with additional risks for the LGBTQ community, which may not do as well in other global regions. As a series cast with relative unknowns, it cannot be a very expensive production.
This is a no-brainer from the outside. A Heartstopper season 2 renewal would gain a massive amount of fan goodwill, but it would be hard to look over the corpses of a million other shows like Babysitter's Club, Archive 81, and Teenage Bounty Hunters, which were all in similar situations. Hopefully we hear something soon.
