China is one of the few places in the world still adhering to a zero-covid strategy. It is the cornerstone of China's pandemic policy and the country has taken drastic measures to eliminate all cases of the virus, placing entire cities under a strict curfew for weeks at a time. The policy has caused discontent and unrest among members of the public, accusations of inhumane treatment, and concerns of severe economic damage after weeks or months of heavy restrictions. Tedros comments mark a rare rebuke of Chinese policy by the World Health Organization. The WHO is in conflict with the president because he has stated that officials will adhere to the policy and staked his political reputation on its success.
