Is there a play-off to determine the league champion? Imagine the drama...

The prospect of an unprecedented winner-takes-all decider isn't as unlikely as it first appears, as Manchester City know they will win the title again if they gain seven points from their last three matches.

If two teams are level on points, goals scored and head-to-head results, a 39th match will determine the champion.

Both games between the two ended in a 2-2 draw. Should they win their remaining two matches, City will finish the season with the same number of points as the Reds.

All plausible so far. The goals scenario is on.

Goal difference would be the first factor to decide the title if the Reds pick up three points more than City. The city is three ahead.

Both teams have netted 89, so it's not implausible that the team with the higher goal differential would peg that back. We will go to a play-off if that remains level between now and the end of the season.

A straight shootout between the rivals would be a mouth-watering one for the neutral, but it could also be a major headaches for the league.

With international matches scheduled from 1 June, a date of 25 May would appear most likely, although no planning has been made as of yet.
