Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines compared unborn babies to sea turtle eggs while arguing against codifying the abortion law.

Why do we have laws to protect the eggs of eagles and sea turtles? Daines spoke against the bill on the Senate floor, saying that if you destroy an egg, you are killing a baby sea turtle or baby eagle.

He said that a pre-born human baby would be stripped of all protections in all 50 states under the Democrats' bill.

Daines stood next to a poster showing sea turtles and a row of babies. He later claimed that an unhatched sea turtle would have more protections than an unborn human baby if the law was changed.

Daines was slammed for his comments over social media, with many users taking offense at his comparison and questions posed.

Sea turtles and eagles don't have constitutional rights as equal citizens of the United States.

A bill that would codify abortion rights in federal law is scheduled to be voted on by the Senate on Wednesday. A leaked Supreme Court majority opinion indicated that the court was poised to overturn the landmark 1973 case that set the legal precedent for abortion rights.
