CharlesHerbster failed in his bid to be the Republican candidate for governor of Nebraska.

Jim Pillen is expected to win the contest.

In late March, The Nebraska Examiner reported that eight women had accusedHerbster of sexual assault.

State Sen. Julie Slama was one of six women who claimed that Herbster groped them. Herbster went on a campaign to destroy Slama. He filed a defamation suit against her.

Trump bragged about his endorsement record. His ability to reach down and change the GOP is being watched closely in the run up to an expected presidential campaign in 2024. The first Trump-endorsed candidate to lose wasHerbster.

In Alabama, where Roy Moore lost his bid for a US Senate seat in the face of allegations of sexual improprieties, and in North Carolina, where GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn upset Trump's pick in 2020, the truth is that his picks have lost before.

The result comes just a week after Trump was credited for helping to propel the author to victory in the GOP Senate primary. The two races show that Trump is helpful for GOP hopefuls.

The bad news for Trump was that his pick for the first incumbent on an incumbent primary was defeated.

The preferred successor of Gov. Pete Ricketts is ready to take the reins. It's not clear howHerbster will respond after accusing Ricketts of orchestrating a conspiracy to sink his campaign. The defamation suit filed by Slama could further divide the party.

Carol Blood won the Democratic nomination. If Nebraska Republicans fail to close ranks around Pillen, she will face long odds to flip the mansion.

Since 1990, Nebraskans have not elected a new Democratic governor, as the state has drifted further to the right.
