San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin will have surgery on Wednesday and hopes to make it to part of the road trip.
He was in street clothes before the game and said he didn't think he had cancer.
Since the team returned from a road trip last week, he has been feeling unwell.
The team said that he had a gastrointestinal issue. He was at the ballpark last Thursday but did not win. Ryan Christenson replaced him.
The Padres said on Monday that they might have to play without Melvin in the next few days. They said that after a few hours, they decided to manage the game and it was a 6-0 loss. Third base coach Matt Williams took care of the post-game news conference because third baseman Melvin wasn't feeling well. Christenson, who would have been interim manager, entered COVID protocols.
Christenson was supposed to manage the game if he cleared protocol in time.
I am not sure what today will look like, but on the road. The staff is great. They will probably do a better job than I would.
The Padres begin a three-city, nine-game road trip on Friday and will end on May 22. He hopes to be in Philadelphia and Atlanta for the first six games. The trip ends with three games in San Francisco.
We will probably have talks every day about lineups and such, but I hope it is only Atlanta and Philadelphia.
