Every release, there seems to be more features for smaller and smaller drones. The Mavic 3 was a relatively small drone with a camera sensor, pro video quality and more. The Mini 3 Pro has brought a lot of that technology to it. It is more capable on paper than the Air 2 model, which is twice its size.
The Mini 3 Pro is light enough to avoid most regulations. It can detect obstacles all around, and it has a sensor larger than most phones. It has 4K at 60 frames per second and 120 frames per second slow-mo, and most of the features of the Mavic 3 like ActiveTrack, QuickShots and MasterShots.
The tiny size and light weight make it more maneuverable than the Mavic 3, and it's launching with an all-new remote that has a built-in screen. The Mini 3 Pro is one of the most expensive lightweight drones out there. I took it for a spin with my friend Samuel Dejours to see if it could justify the price.
The Mini 3 Pro is so small that you can fit it in a small bag. It's ideal for travel, adventure activities and more. You don't have to register it or have a license in the US or other countries for it to be under 250 grams.
You'll need to take the figure of 34 minutes of flight time with a huge grain of salt. The return to home warning kicked in after 25 minutes after we ran it to exhaustion several times. The numbers depend on wind and other factors.

The Mini 3 Pro has a new aerodynamic body that tilts when flying forward to reduce drag. The redesign allowed for bigger propellers to be used.
The Mini 3 Pro has the same features as the Mini 2, but with a different system that can detect objects in front, behind and below. That system is important for mountain bikers who want to film their adventures in difficult environments.
The Ocusync 3.0 RC video transmission works over 12 km, but we found it to be a weak point in our tests. If you don't have a direct line of sight, it can lose the signal very quickly. We tried multiple passes under a bridge and it either lost the signal or we had to find a way out. You won't get close to 12 km if you don't have a line of sight to the drone.
The camera tilts down 90 degrees and up 60, more than double the Mini 2 and the Air 2. Dramatic shots of buildings, cliffs and so forth can be captured with the higher upward angle. It has a bigger sensor than the one on the iPhone 13 and is only 40 percent smaller than the one on the Mavic 2 Pro. It has a 24mm-equivalent f/1.7 fixed-aperture lens.
The Mini 3 Pro has taken a page from the phone. You can shoot high-res photos or combine four images into one for better night sensitivity, just like on many phones. It has four times the zoom for 4K and twice the zoom for HD.
Video specifications are impressive for a small drone. You can shoot 4K and 2.7K at 60 or 120 frames per second. Another cool trick is true vertical video mode. The camera is turned sideways for both video and photos to maximize quality. You can shoot in portrait or landscape modes and get up to 48MP and 4K video.
You can get the Mini 3 Pro with the new RC remote that has a built-in screen for an extra $240, if you prefer not to use a phone and a remote. It looks and feels cheaper than the RC Pro, but the display is not as bright or crisp. We had to stay in the shade to get a clear view when we used it in bright sunlight.
The screen is large and bright, and it's very convenient compared to the RC-N1. When you don't have to take out a phone, it makes shooting that much easier.
It has power, home and a cinema. Photos and video can be taken with the front triggers and the joysticks can be stowed underneath for travel. Unlike the RC-N1, it has separate triggering for photos and video. You can avoid diving into the menus if you hit either of the Triggers.
It has a host port and a microSD card slot for recording. It's a nice addition to the remote RC lineup. The company hasn't said if it will offer the remote separately or with other drones.
Many key features like ActiveTrack weren't available on launch and didn't arrive until months later, making it hard to review them. I was able to test almost all of the functions on the Mini 3 Pro.
The first thing we wanted to see was the APAS 4.0 obstacle detection and ActiveTrack following. We took a mountain bike and headed to a forest to see if we could beat the Mini 3 Pro against the Mavic 3. The goal was to drive through some tree-lined trails and see which drones could keep up.
The Mini 3 Pro destroyed the larger drone. It followed Nathanael with more agility and avoided a lot of trees. The sensor missed a small branch, but the crash didn't cause a scratch. The small drones are less likely to be damaged in an accident. The Mavic 3 was much slower and stopped completely rather than going around obstacles.
There are a few things to keep in mind when subject tracking. FocusTrack and ActiveTrack only work at 4K 30p. A feature that allows the drone to go around obstacles rather than stopping first isn't yet enabled.
The Mini 3 Pro acquitted itself well in various scenarios. While trying to use the Helix mode function, it detected an obstacle and stopped. The Mini 3 Pro was able to work perfectly on the functions Helix, Boomerang, Dronie, Rocket and Circle, though the quality was limited to1080p. We used the Hyperlapse function to make a time lapse video of a city at night.
The news is mostly good when it comes to image quality. The video was sharp and accurate to the point of being comparable to a good phone video. The Mini 3 Pro has a small sensor, which makes it not as good as a camera like the Mavic 3.
I had a few issues. I had to adjust the settings because the automatic mode tended to overexpose bright objects. Exposure compensation worked best in sunny weather.
It has a fully manual pro mode to control things like shutter, ISO and color balance. Most users will leave it in automatic mode and change the exposure compensation settings. Exposure change transitions in automatic mode aren't as smooth as they are on the Mavic 3, so you have to be careful.
The Mini 3 Pro has 60 frames per second at 4K for smooth video with fast- moving subjects. The addition of true 120 frames per second slow mo at1080p is a great option for birds in flight, action sports and so on. Keep in mind that ActiveTrack doesn't work in those modes. It's kind of a shame, as high-frame rate video is what you need for tracking action.
