The New York Rangers are sticking with Shesterkin for Game 5 of their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins despite pulling their star goaltender in back-to-back losses that have pushed them to the brink of elimination.

He is the best goalie in the league. The Rangers coach said after the game that he was going with him because the Pens had taken a commanding lead in the series.

Shesterkin was pulled after the first and second periods in Pittsburgh. The game is at Madison Square Garden.

He is probably frustrated. He will be back in there and ready to win the next game. Gallant said he has all the confidence in the world in him. Three pucks were hit by him. We played a soft game.

The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with a long-range shot by Lafreniere. The goal that Sidney Crosby scored on the power play was initially ruled a goal. The puck disappeared under Shesterkin's pad, but the officials said video review showed Crosby's shot crossed the line.

The game was over in the second period. Defenseman Mike Matheson's shot off of Rangers forward Frank Vatrano knuckled past Shesterkin at 3:14. Jake Guentzel scored on a Bryan Rust pass for a 3-1 lead. Mark Friedman scored from the slot. The Rangers got one back at 14:04 to cut the lead to 4-2, but Danton Heinen and Jeff Carter scored on the backs of the net for a 6-2 advantage.

Shesterkin gave up six goals on 30 shots and left the game. He gave up four goals on 15 shots and was pulled after two periods.

We were not playing very well in front of him. Rangers forward Andrew Copp said it was not on him.

Alexandar Georgiev entered the game for the second game in a row. He gave up a goal on 20 shots in the third period. He gave up a goal on 11 shots. The Rangers season is on the line in Game 5, according to Gallant.

The coach said there wasn't much commitment to playing defense. Soft on the ice. That is the biggest difference.

Crosby had three points in the win and expects the Rangers to fight back.

We know we have a lot of work to do. He said that you will see the other team's best next game.
