The Dallas Cowboys may not be the only team in the city if the mayor gets his way.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the mayor believes the city can host another football team.

He explained why he thinks Dallas is the best place for an expansion team after he responded to a question from the NFL on CBS.

Mayor Eric Johnson @Johnson4Dallas

The answer is Dallas. Why? We are about to pass the Chicago metro and become the #3 metro in the US, which would make us the largest US metro WITHOUT 2 teams. Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team and we would be able to sustain 2 @NFL teams better than LA or NY. https://t.co/ikG0oeZq4T

Johnson continued explaining his rationale in a series of posts, saying that the city needs a team that can play in Southern Dallas, which would set up the possibility of a Super Bowl between that franchise and the Cowboys.

The expansion team would not be sharing AT&T Stadium with the Cowboys.

He highlighted potential opposition from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and said that so far the main reason that this can't happen is because of Jerry Jones. Let's not say anything in Mr. Jones's mouth. I work for the residents of Dallas, not Jerry Jones. Other team owners do not work for Jerry Jones.

If expansion is off the table, the mayor had two suggestions for teams that could relocate.

So which AFC team do you want to see move to Southern Dallas? @chargers or @Jaguars 🫣

Still, Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports and Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk each called the possibility of a new NFL team in the Dallas area a pipe dream.

The City of Dallas won't allow any more teams who don't actually have any of their assets located within our city limits to use our name.

The owner of the Cowboys has the right to approve or deny any team in Frisco.

Dallas will remain a Cowboys town for now, even though the mayor wants two NFL teams in the metro area.
