  • Motorola is reportedly working on a rollable smartphone.
  • The smartphone will extend vertically instead of horizontally like other rollable prototypes we've seen.
  • The phone is apparently very early in development and at least a year from launch.

Rumors are heating up about a successor to the Razr. The company is working on a device that will have a rollable form factor.

Evan Blass says that a new rollable phone is currently in development. This would be the first rollable phone from the company, and it could feature a unique design to set itself apart from other rollable concepts and prototypes we have seen over the past couple of years.

Felix will apparently extend vertically, making the display taller, not wider, like the concept OPPO X 2021. A more compact design is likely to be extended to a standard-sized smartphone with one-third of the display wrapped around the bottom of the phone.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, TCL showed off a concept phone that looked promising.

This design would fit in with the current take on foldable phones. At a time when many of the best foldable phones were aiming for larger, tablet-like displays, the company helped kick off the clamshell foldables. The display that extends vertically could fit the bill because of the focus on making the phones more pocketable.

The device is very early in development. The Edge 30 Pro was modified so that it could be used to test the software for this kind of display. The device is at least a year away from retail, so it could arrive in late 2023 or in 2024, if at all.

Things could change between now and the device's launch. The first rollable phones are likely to arrive as early as next year. Several companies are working on them, including the one that showed off its own concepts.
