The Orange County Sheriff's Office said that Adreian Payne was shot and killed in Florida.
He was dead when he was taken to the hospital. Payne was the 15th pick in the NBA draft.
Lawrence Dority was arrested for the shooting on a murder warrant. Dority spoke with police before he was taken to jail.
Payne was a member of the All-Big Ten second team in two of his four seasons at Michigan State. He led the team to the Elite Eight in the 2013-14 season and averaged 16.4 points and 7.3 assists for the Spartans.
Draymond Green was a teammate of Payne at Michigan State.
The player played four seasons in the NBA. He was cut by the Magic after he was named in a report by Outside The Lines that he had been involved in an alleged sexual assault at Michigan State. There were no charges filed in that case.
Payne spent the last few years of his career overseas after he left the NBA.
Lacey Holsworth, an 8-year-old cancer patient, befriended Payne while he was at Michigan State. The team cut down the nets after winning the Big Ten tournament. Holsworth died weeks later. Payne released a statement about her death.
He said that Lacey will always be a part of his life. She taught me how to fight through everything with a smile on my face.
Payne took a break from basketball because his son had a brain procedure. He said his family was more important than basketball.
Payne wrote in his statement that he will be back doing what he loves soon. Amari is my heartbeat.
