If the Supreme Court overturns the abortion law, New York lawmakers want to make it easier for people to get abortions in and out of the state.
The Reproductive Freedom and Inequity Program within the New York Department of Health will fund abortion providers and nonprofits so that they can increase access to care.
Grants to nonprofits for direct support to people seeking abortions, as well as travel and lodging costs for those traveling to New York from out of state, are included in that.
The fund would make sure those without insurance could afford the procedure.

There are other measures in New York that could preserve access to abortion. James and other top Democrats said they would support a constitutional amendment that would be harder to overturn if it were enacted. Other bills are being considered that would establish legal protections for abortion patients and abortion providers outside of the state.
James said in a statement Monday that they know what happens when women are unable to control their own bodies and will not go back to those dark times.

The governor of California said the state will work to codify abortion rights in its constitution, while the governor of Connecticut signed a law that shields residents from legal liability if they help people get an abortion.
