If the Supreme Court overturns the abortion law, New York lawmakers want to make it easier for people to get abortions in and out of the state.

The Reproductive Freedom and Inequity Program within the New York Department of Health will fund abortion providers and nonprofits so that they can increase access to care.

Grants to nonprofits for direct support to people seeking abortions, as well as travel and lodging costs for those traveling to New York from out of state, are included in that.

The fund would make sure those without insurance could afford the procedure.

60 days after it is signed into law, the legislation will take effect.

9%. James said Monday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the majority of abortions in New York in the year were performed for people who live out of state. The legislation predicts that New York will be the closest place to obtain a legal abortion for between 190,000 and 280,000 more women of reproductive age if the law is overturned.

What To Watch For

There are other measures in New York that could preserve access to abortion. James and other top Democrats said they would support a constitutional amendment that would be harder to overturn if it were enacted. Other bills are being considered that would establish legal protections for abortion patients and abortion providers outside of the state.

James said in a statement Monday that they know what happens when women are unable to control their own bodies and will not go back to those dark times.

According to a draft opinion obtained by Politico, the Supreme Court is likely to overturn the landmark 1973 opinion in the coming weeks. New York and other Democratic-led states have called for increased restrictions on abortion if the Supreme Court overturns the law. The governor of California said the state will work to codify abortion rights in its constitution, while the governor of Connecticut signed a law that shields residents from legal liability if they help people get an abortion.
