Dick Vitale rang the bell to celebrate the end of his treatment. (0:20)

Dick Vitale will be the recipient of the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the ESPYS.

Vitale said in August that he had undergone multiple surgeries to remove melanoma. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in October. His treatment for cancer forced him to take a break from college basketball coverage.

The good news is that he doesn't think anything is life threatening. Vitale said in December that he had pre-cancerous Dysplasia on his vocal cords.

Vitale was recognized for his contributions to the sport, the league and his fight against cancer at the SEC tournament in March, after documenting his cancer journey on social media.

Vitale said in April that he is cancer-free.

The Jimmy V Award was named after Jim Valvano, Vitale's former broadcast partner, who gave a speech about living with cancer when he was honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the first ESPYS in 1993. Valvano was presented by Vitale at the award show.

Vitale said in a statement Monday that he was blown away when he received the call from Jimmy Pitaro about receiving the award. During my seven month battle, I reflected on his speech many times, and remembered my mother and father, who taught me never to believe in anything. Jimmy V's legacy lives on. I am very grateful to have received this award in his honor.

The Jimmy V Award was first presented in 2007. The V Foundation for Cancer Research is a charity founded by Valvano.

The ESPYS will be broadcast on ABC on July 20.
