According to a White House press release, the Biden administration secured commitments from 20 internet service providers to either reduce prices or increase speeds to serve low-income households.

According to the White House, the news means that tens of millions of households could get high-speed internet for free. $30 per month off of their internet bills is available to low-income households. The 20 internet service providers that made a commitment to the White House to offer high-speed internet plans for no more than that amount can provide internet service for free.

The White House said that the commitments come from companies like AT&T and NBCUniversal. More than 80% of the U.S. population lives in places where high-speed internet is offered by the participating ISPs.

The commitments ensure that high-speed internet is offered to families who qualify for the affordable program. The White House believes that a high-speed plan should offer download speeds of at least 100 Megabits per second.

The White House said that under the program, the cost of Fios service was lowered from $39.99 per month to $30 per month, with upload and download speeds of at least 200 Megabits per second. The speed of the $30 per month plan was doubled to 100 Megabits per second.

GetInternet.gov was launched by the administration to help consumers find local providers who are part of the program. It plans to reach out to households that may be eligible for other federal aid programs.
