The programming guides of several major Russian cable and satellite television providers displayed a message opposing Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine during the annual Victory Day parade on Monday.
A clip of the incident shared by the British Broadcasting Corporation, the names of programs, and their descriptions on several major Russian networks on different time slots appear to have been changed to display a message which tells the Russian people they are being lied to by the authorities.
The message says that the blood of thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of their murdered children were on the viewer's hands.
It's not clear if the messages were displayed due to a hack or internal sabotage.
One of the cable providers that sent the messages told Russia's TASS news agency that it was investigating the issue and would try to prevent it from happening again.
Two former employees of the Russian news website, Lenta.ru, altered existing articles to display anti-war messages and also call out Putin as apathetic, paranoid dictator.
It is easier to hide economic failure with a war. One of the messages displayed on Lenta.ru said that he had unleashed a meaningless war and was leading Russia into oblivion.
Victory Day is an annual event that commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in the second world war. Putin spoke from Moscow's Red Square and compared Russia's invasion of Ukraine to the Soviet Union's fight against Hitler. In his speech, Putin said that the Russian army was fighting on its own land and that he was forced into the conflict by NATO.
Several online hacktivist groups have been attacking Russia since the start of the invasion of Ukraine. According to the Washington Post, more passwords and sensitive data from Russia were dumped onto the open Web in March than any other country.
