Tottenham Supporters' Trust said the club's away support was "superb" at Anfield but songs about joblessness are "not fair game"

The chant about poverty and joblessness was condemned by the trust.

Some Spurs fans were singing a chant about unemployment levels.

The chant is not what we are about, according to the trust. We are better than that.

Poverty and joblessness are not fair game for banter.

There is a cost of living crisis throughout England, including in London. The club represents an area with the highest rate of unemployment in the country.

English football has a long tradition of singing about the opposition and we are reluctant to tell fans how to support the team. We were disappointed to hear the chant "sign on" at the away match.

We are proud of our away support and we want it to be noticed for positive reasons. Our fans gave great support to a great team performance for most of the game.

Spurs fans have provided financial backing to Marine FC, and have contributed to foodbanks and community initiatives in London. This is what we are about.

The statement was responded to by the group of fans known as the Spirit of Shankly.

In April, Manchester United condemned fans who sang about the tragedy during a game.
