The most promising private companies in North America use artificial intelligence to demonstrate real business potential. They encompass industries such as health care, agriculture, construction, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, cybersecurity, finance and business and customer services.

Approximately 800 companies were asked to provide details of how they use artificial intelligence, business models, customers and financials in order to be considered for the finals. Forbes received more than 400 submissions.

The numbers and ranked companies were crunched by Konstantine Buhler and the data partner. More than 100 companies were evaluated by a panel of judges. They weren't allowed to judge applicants in which they might have a vested interest. The list is looking for companies that show traction and financial promise and that prioritize diverse teams. As problems arise in the absence of diversity, that is crucial.

The final selection is ordered alphabetically and not ranked. Estimates from data provider Pitchbook have been used in instances where companies have submitted valuation information.

Artificial intelligence is making strides in both visual art and commercial applications. Nick Sheeran used artificial intelligence to create visuals for this year's list. Read more about how he did it.
