Chris Paul played just 23 minutes for the Phoenix Suns in Game 4 of their second-round series against the Dallas Mavericks, which became the main storyline as the Mavericks put the finishing touches on a win to even the series.

There is an irony in that Paul has a reputation for exaggerating to draw critical fouls, so Kidd made a point of it.

Kidd told reporters that they were being taught by one of the best point guards ever.

The bottom line is that the Mavericks were the better team for the second game in a row.

The supporting cast came through in the clutch moments, even though Doncic had a double-double with 26 points, 11 assists, seven rebound and three steals. The Mavericks had six players score in double figures, and one of them was Dorian Finney-Smith, who shot 8-of-12 from deep for 24 points and eight boards.

In the first two games of the series in Phoenix, Doncic averaged 40 points a night but didn't receive much help to keep pace with the Suns.

If Phoenix is looking for a silver lining, it can take solace in the fact that Sunday's game was still hanging in the balance at times in the fourth quarter even with Paul fouling out.

The Mavericks will not be able to duplicate that in Phoenix, which will allow the Suns to regain control of the series, like they did in the first round.

Kidd pointed out that Paul has gotten away with some favorable breaks in that category in the past, so maybe Paul will get a better whistle after fouling out.

He could set the tone for the rest of the series if he does in Game 5.
