The film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and others had a $450 million global debut. Korea was the highest earner at $30M, with the other $265M coming from 49 other international markets. Multiverse is now the second biggest global start for a Hollywood film in this era behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, thanks to all the teases and appearances of Stephen Strange. It is the 11th biggest opening of all time and the fourth biggest global start for an MCU film.
It's not clear if it will be as big as that movie, which had people come back for more than one viewing to get in as much of the Spider-action as they could. It will have some legs for the rest of the month with solid reviews and plenty of discussion about the film. It won't be long before it surpasses the opening of the original Doctor Strange film.
Strange has the first half of May to itself. Alex Garland's new folk horror flick Men, The Bob's Burgers Movie, and Top Gun: Maverick will all be in theaters closer to Memorial Day. If you saw Strange this weekend, you probably got a preview of the sequel showcasing some pretty sweet dogfighting action, because Tom Cruise is still a big box office draw. Even though Stephen Strange has survived a lot, he can't stop Tom Cruise.
