A woman of South Asian descent, named Sabina Begum, shared her skincare routine to get an analysis from a dermatologist as part of Insider's Skin Clinic.

She said her biggest skin problems are dullness, hyperpigmentation, and large pores. She has a morning and night routine, and uses a lot of products.

Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a board-certified dermatologist at New York City's Schweiger Dermatology Group, said that Begum has an impressive routine, but suggested changing a few products for better results.

Antioxidant cleansers do 'nada' for the skin

Every morning, Begum begins her skincare routine by massaging a cleanser on her skin for one minute and then washing it away with water.

Nazarian suggested skipping the cleanser for the skin.

Nazarian saidAntioxidants need to be left on the skin rather than being wiped off.

When the skin gets exposed to free radical damage, or when unstable atoms are found in polluted air, it can causepigmentation. Free radicals can damage the skin, but they can't because of the vitamins C and D.

Nazarian said that Begum should start her routine by applying a lightweight serum to her skin.

Skip the alcohol-based toner

The second step is to apply the No7 Radiant Results Revitalizing Toner using a small cotton pad, which she bought with the goal of shrinking her pores.

She uses a hyperpigmentation cream to address it.

Alcohol-based toners can dry out the skin and make it appear dull, so Nazarian suggested that Begum stop using them. She said that the day cream and sunscreen can stay, but she urged him to use a high SPF sunscreen.

Use a retinol at night, and don't use multiple cleansers for dry skin

The INKEY List Oat Cleansing Balm and Boots Vitamins C cleanse is what Begum begins her nighttime routine with.

She uses Fade Out Extra Care Brightening Night Cream because it contains niacinamide, which is also known as vitamins B3 and C.

Nazarian said double cleansing may be drying out her skin and urged her to stick to one cleanser. She doesn't need a niacinamide product at night since she already gets it from her daytime brightening cream, and once a day is enough.

Nazarian said to use a product containing retinol at night to help with anti-aging.

'Work smarter not harder'

She eats a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables, drinks plenty of water, and wears long-sleeved clothing to protect her skin from the sun. She applies makeup to her lips.

In the shower, Begum uses Sanex Biome Protect and Vaseline. She uses a facial scrub once a week. She said she doesn't use the toner because it irritates her skin.

Nazarian applauded Begum for protecting her lips, but suggested a hyaluronic acid-based exfoliator instead of the physical scrub, which can be harsher on the skin.

Nazarian said that Begum had a good routine, but she needed to work smarter, not harder.

If you use a product that only does one thing, you will end up with a 15 step regimen, which nobody has time for.
