Brian Chesky works at the office as a relic of the past.
In an interview for Time, Chesky said he believes the office is from a pre-digital age.
The office as we know it is over, he told Time. We have to move forward.
Would we invent it if the office didn't exist? What would it be if we invented it? People are going to still go to hospitals and work, and people are going to still go to coffee shops and work. I think that for someone with a laptop, the question is, what is an office supposed to do?
Chesky said the careers page of the company received more than one million views.
Chesky said in January that he was working from various cities across the US. He acknowledged that there will still be some need for offices, but he concluded that the office has to do something that a home cannot do.
He said that people will still go to offices, but it will be for different purposes.
Chesky told Time working 100% remotely can be good for hiring since employees can be based anywhere, but it can also make some employees feel isolated from their coworkers.
He believes there are flaws with the common hybrid work model of having employees work from the office three days a week, which companies like Apple are using.
The alternative to this model is for employees to meet up in person one week per quarter.
He predicted that three days a week would become two days a week, and two days a week would become one day a week. People are going to be more intentional about when they gather. Let's gather for a week or two at a time.
