Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa has been cast as the last star of Doctor Who, and will be on screen in 2023.

There aren't many words to describe how I'm feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and a little bit scared, Gatwa said in a statement. I will do the same. Being able to work with the Doctor is a dream come true for Russell T Davies. His writing is engaging, intelligent and dangerous. An actor is a playground.

Gatwa is best known for his role as Eric Effiong in the comedy series, and is also set to appear in Warner Bros. and Gerwig's upcoming Barbie movie. Gatwa will make his debut as the Doctor at the end of the 13th Doctor's regeneration, before making his debut as the Doctor in the year 2023.

The future is here and it's Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it is so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. It's an honor to work with him, and I can't wait to start.

Doctor Who is going to return to the air on both the UK and the US later this year.
