The governor of the Luhansk region said on Sunday that nearly 60 people are feared dead after a Russian bomb struck a school building in the eastern Ukrainian village of Bilohorivka.

The governor of Luhansk claimed in a post on Telegram that Russian forces bombed a school building.

Rescuers were able to douse a fire that raged for nearly four hours after the strike and saved around 30 people.

The bodies of two boys who were killed in the strike were recovered by emergency workers.

Sixty people who were in the building are likely to have died under the rubble, according to the governor.

The key port city of Odesa and the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol were hit by Russian forces over the weekend.

On Monday, Moscow is set to celebrate Victory Day, which commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in World War 2. Ukrainian officials have warned of more intense Russian strikes in the lead up to May 9, as it seeks some symbolic victories on the battlefield. According to the Associated Press, Moscow wants to take control of the Azovstal steel plant from the Ukrainians in order to complete its conquest of Mariupol.
