The Kentucky Derby will go down as one of the greatest upsets in the history of thoroughbred racing. Rich Strike was the biggest long shot in the race.

Horse racing fans could have hoped for a better Derby. For the first time in three years, the crowd at Churchill Downs was back to full capacity because of the rain that cleared in time for the race. The shocking upset is what fans will remember.

According to the official Kentucky Derby website, Epicenter was the post-time favorite at 4-1, followed by Taiba at 5-1, Zandon at 6-1 and Messier at 7-1. Rich Strike was 80-1.

Reaction.

Stunned is the only way to sum up the reaction to Rich Strike's win. The colt entered the field on Friday as a replacement for the scratched Ethereal Road.

Reed and Sonny Leon are both first-time winners of the Derby, and neither thought their horse would be in the race as of early Friday morning.

If you didn’t hear us talking about this today - Rich Strike’s trainer texted folks just after 9 yesterday conceding they didn’t make it in. Then got word they did in fact get in because Lukas scratched in time.

The team at Red TR Racing believed they had a chance.

During the post-race broadcast, owner Richard Dawson said that they never enter a race that they don't think they can win.

This does not mean that either Reed orDawson expected Rich Strike to finish first.

Reed said that he fell down when he hit the wire. We are not supposed to be here.

Leon deserves a lot of credit for guiding the run. He steered Rich Strike from the outside toward the post, weaving through traffic and sending the horse past the favorites on the final stretch. Rich Strike finished the Kentucky Derby in two minutes and 2.61 seconds.

The fastest start in Derby history was by Rich Strike and Leon.

Leon had never ridden in the Kentucky Derby before, but he is a seasoned jockey with more than 5,000 races on his resume, according to Front Office Sports.

Leon showed his skills on the biggest stage.

Rich Strike had the goods to win the game, but few outside of his team thought so. The three-year-old had only won once in seven races. This was the second biggest upset in the history of the Kentucky Derby.

The second race of the series is scheduled for Saturday, May 21. Rich Strike has a chance at winning the Triple Crown, and if he is entered in the second race, he will have shorter odds than he did coming into Saturday.
