The Texas community made the announcement that Mickey Gilley had died. The mayor of Pasadena, Texas broke the sad news on the city's official Facebook page over the weekend that the singer and founder of the world's biggest honky ton died Saturday surrounded by loved ones. It was my honor to know this man most of my life. The exact circumstances of his death weren't revealed, but Mickey was a true musical talent who charted 42 singles in the Top 40 Country Charts over the course of two decades. Pasadena was put on the map thanks to the John Travolta movieUrban Cowboy, and the city was honored to have Mickey perform at the State of the City in 2020. We are praying for comfort and peace for Mickey's family, loved ones and fans. Gilley's Club, a dance hall that rose to prominence after it was heavily featured in UC, went on to become a tourist attraction for country fans everywhere. His rendition of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" became a smash hit at the time, peaking at #1 on the country chart. Before his resurgence in the 80s, MG had a lot of success in the 70s from songs like "Don't The Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time." He has won several awards with the Academy of Country Music, including Single of the Year, Song of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Top Male Vocalist, and Album of the Year. Mickey is survived by his wife, Cindy Gilley, and his 4 children. He died at 86. I am sad.
