The director of machine learning at Apple, Ian Goodfellow, resigned from his position a little over four years after joining the company.

Goodfellow told staff in an email that his resignation was due to Apple requiring employees to work from the office at least one day per week by April 11 and at least two days per week by May.

The three-day in-office work policy was enacted on May 23 and Apple employees began returning to Apple Park last month. Some employees are not happy about the plan to return to in-person work.

In a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook during the summer, a group of employees said that without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of them feel they have to choose between their families, their well-being, or being able to do their best work. This is a decision that no one takes lightly, and a decision that many would prefer not to have to make.
