Netflix

There is a lot of talk about the level of quality of content on the internet. The issue is not that there is no quality programming at all, but that it falls into three different categories.

  1. Great shows that Netflix also thinks are great, and renews endlessly (small category).
  2. Great shows that Netflix cancels due to what they deem is low viewership.
  3. Great shows that are buried among a giant pile of content Netflix pushes out every week, so they’re ignored or left in limbo.

I want to show what I mean when I say that these shows fall into all three categories. I'm going through some of the top-reviewed shows on Netflix to demonstrate the point.

The Babysitters Club was canceled after two seasons with perfect scores.

After one season, Dash and Lilly were canceled.

Most won't know that Blood of Zeus exists, but it was renewed for season 2.

Perfectly reviewed first season, not renewed for season 2 yet, never in the top 10.

Tuca and Bertie were picked up by Adult Swim.

American Vandal was canceled after two seasons because it wasn't fully owned by Netflix.

I think you should leave with Tim Robinson. Great call! Not enough people know about it.

Mindhunter is one of the best series on the internet, but is in eternal limbo after the second season. This appears to be an issue with David Fincher, not with the company.

Returned for a well-reviewed season 2 last month, Russian Doll was a blip on the top 10 lists.

One of Neflix's most popular series is returning for Part 3.

It was overlooked, but it was picked up for season 2.

One of the best hidden gems is Dark, a German time travel series that ran for three seasons.

Sex Education has been renewed for a fourth season.

One of the most popular shows in the history of television, a no-brainer renewal for season 2.

The End of the F-ing World was canceled after one season.

Teenage Bounty Hunters

The Bounty Hunters are teenagers.

Netflix

One of the biggest tragedies of any of these was the cancellation of the Teenage Bounty Hunters.

The most famous series allowed to finish with 5 seasons planned to come in total.

The show was canceled after three seasons.

The hit they bought from Lifetime seems to be airing for as long as they want.

The Crown will be allowed to run its full course and more or less catch up with the present day.

After three seasons, the Santa Clarita Diet was canceled.

Lower rated than some of these, but allowed to run for its full duration, which just ended with a two-part season 4.

The Society was canceled after one season.

Archive 81 was canceled after one season.

The OA was canceled after two seasons.

The Umbrella Academy has seemed to land itself infinite renewal with solid numbers.

The Bridgerton English language hit will likely be renewed to finish the series.

After airing season 2, it is likely that it will be greenlit to read all five books.

There are a lot of good shows here, it's just that close to half have been canceled early, and you probably haven't heard of a quarter of the ones that have survived.

The quality is hard to find, and often hard to get attached to, given all the cancellation. Even if they die too soon, I would give them a try.
