The largest cruise ship in the world, the Viking Octantis, completed its maiden voyage in the Great Lakes on May 6 and will be arriving in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the first time.
The largest cruise ship in the Great Lakes has sailed. Welcoming 378 guests and 256 crew members on each itinerary, the Polar Class 6 vessel is larger than Viking's river cruise ships yet smaller than its ocean liners. Before the Great Lakes season, it sailed in the Antarctic.
The first ship in the fleet to debut is the Viking Octantis, which is the sister ship to the future Viking Polaris, which will debut later this year.
The viking Octantis is an expedition ship with a focus on science and will sail the Great Lakes, South America and Antarctica.
The momentous occasion for Milwaukee was welcomed by both local government and local tourism. The economic impact from the city's estimated 10,000 cruise passengers this year is estimated to be between two and four million dollars.
The Great Lakes region welcomed only a small number of passengers. The growth is expected to continue and the new Great Lakes itineraries are a part of it.
We all know that Milwaukee is a great place to visit and is filled with attractions. When cruise passengers leave their ships and engage with our city, they will find that is what they are looking for. Mayor Johnson said people around the globe are taking notice of our city.
