Dan Bellino apologized after he ejected Madison Bumgarner from the game against the Miami Marlins.
I would like to address my actions on May 4 involving Madison Bumgarner. My children were told to sit in the front row so I could umpire. I did not meet those expectations this week. I take full responsibility for what happened. I apologize for the incident and will learn from it.
Bumgarner was thrown out at the end of the third after a routine check of his hands and glove. The two got into a fight and the personnel needed to restrain Bumgarner. The situation went from bad to worse before Bumgarner calmed down.
A source familiar with the situation says that Bellino was disciplined for the incident, but he is working the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers series this weekend.
Bumgarner won't face further punishment.
After the game on Wednesday, Bumgarner said that he didn't know if he could say anything that would make the situation better.
Bellino claimed that Bumgarner was thrown out for using profanity. The veteran pitcher was upset at a ball/strike call by the home plate umpire. That happened minutes before the confrontation with Bellino.
It is extremely rare for an umpire to issue a public apology.
